Black Duct transforms outdated, inefficient metal duct systems into modern, clean, airtight, energy efficient HVAC duct systems that will last the lifetime of the buildings they service.

BDI’s unique patented system is fabricated from recycled ABS plastic with a glass smooth interior surface and an embossed exterior finish, both impervious to moisture. Duct splices and fitting connections are glued in place, providing a water proof interior surface that can be cleaned and disinfected from any location along the entire duct length via access doors. The “sandwiching” of the insulation in between two layers of ABS plastic provides a means of maintaining the integrity of the insulation’s R-value (8.7). The smooth interior surface significantly improves airflow while the 8.7 R-value maintains the temperature of the conditioned air from the source, to the furthest register outlet.

Gluing the components together eliminates all air leaks at splice connections and fitting outlets, maximizing efficiency and minimizing wasted energy. All duct connections are contoured at the edges to enhance airflow and eliminate locations where dirt and dust would normally accumulate.

Installing a Black Duct system is also economical. The labor to install a Black Duct system will be considerably faster than conventional sheet metal systems, reducing the cost of the installation.

Product Description

A majority of home and commercial buildings in the world have some form of heating and/or cooling system utilizing a ducted airflow method. BDI has developed and patented a unique duct system that replaces today's antiquated sheet metal duct products. Sheet metal duct systems act as a conveyor for: mold spores, bacteria, dirt, dust, oxidation and other contaminates, contributing to respiratory ailments and other illnesses. Sheet metal duct systems are virtually impossible to effectively clean due to the duct design, the fastening methods of the components and the materials used. The interior of most duct systems are in deplorable condition and are a major contributor to “sick building syndrome”.

These attributes are key design features to conditioning the building space in an efficient manner, resulting in shorter equipment run cycles that will result in less carbon based emissions.

Labor costs are typically high in the mechanical trades. Skilled labor is increasingly scarce, which leads to higher wage expenditures for employers to retain good quality installers. We have streamlined the installation process to assist in reducing labor costs. Instead of wasting man hours insulating duct and duct fittings with blanket duct wrap and sealing the joint connections with duct sealer, our Black Duct design is simple, safe and fast. The Black Duct system will reduce the installation time by half the man hours or more, as compared to conventional systems. Duct components will be ready to use right out of the box. Black Duct and Black Duct Fittings will be shipped flat, in knock down configurations that will require less than three minutes to glue together for installation.

In most HVAC jobs, custom components are often necessary. The current sheet metal system requires these components to be custom made off-site, adding significant time and expense to the job. With Black Duct, these custom pieces can be field fabricated on the job, eliminating this issue. The use of a few simple tools will yield a plenum, a fitting, or duct section that can be fabricated in a few minutes. This convenience eliminates the need to leave the job site or pay a remote metal fabrication shop a fee to make the piece.

Insurance claims due to severe lacerations from contact with razor sharp sheet metal edges during fabrication and installation are common place. Black Duct is user friendly and does not have any inherent safety issues that would injure the installers. Also, mold remediation has become a huge expense to insurance companies. Mold, bacteria and other contaminates thrive in dark, damp locations such as those found inside of building's galvanized sheet metal ducts. Even worse conditions are often found outside on exposed duct systems on the roofs of many commercial buildings. The material design used in Black Duct can be washed and disinfected to virtually eliminate any mold or bacteria that would normally be found in a conventional metal system. Black Duct would be especially ideal for use in hospitals, computer clean rooms, R & D laboratories and other workplaces requiring sanitary conditions.
